During fast and short diuresis, furosemide causes diuresis. In addition to being a natriuretic, it decreases the levels of Cl- in blood, while increasing the excretion of K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+. Inherited into a renal tubule of the ascending thick limb of Henle's loop, it prevents Na+ and Cl- absorption. An increased excretion of Na+ leads to a secondary intensification of water excretion, as well as increased secretion of K+ in the distal tubule.
